I expect ere many days rolls around we will have to leave our winter quarters that have sheltered us from the rain and cold but for one short month but I hope we will be fortunate enough to get into a better country the next time we stop than this is I have no idea which way we will go some say going east to the Potomac and some say to Memphis but for my part I dont care a great deall which way we go but I would like to get in to a better country than this is I believe I will write a letter her to Brad tonight or this morning rather for tis after two oclock

            Dear Brother
I received your letter of the 27th ult last night and was glad to hear from you again I am well and able to take my rations now as I can get them We are now lying at the levee at Memphis Tenn We left Eastport the 7th of this month for New Orleans or down that way some place We have had rather cold disagreeable weather this far and what make it more disagreeable we (Soldiers) have to take deck passage and only get to see the fire in the cabin by looking through the window or by playing off on the guard at the door which I just done to get in to write I/ had a pass that I got to go uptown yesterday and I held that in my hand and walked pass the guard and did not look at it I expect we will leave here to day for below You must not think it was my fault that you did not get a letter in two month because I wrote oftener than that I did not get your last letter before this I am glad to hear that you will be able to walk out in the spring I am afraid I cannot send this now but I will finish it and try. yours as ever
