Company I Dear Parents it is with pleasure I sit down to under my oil cloth tent to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well & I hope that these few lines will find you enjoying the same Blessing We got our pay Thursday the 27 of March We did not get the pay for our Boart they say that we shant get it only when we get our discharge I got $60.23 cents We got our pay from the the time we enlisted till the 1the of March george Adams did not have only $22 Dollars coming to him Our company sent home 12 or 13 Huhrede Dolars they sent it to/ george Barnard in Rome the Justice of peace I sent $56 Dolars george was sick & he dint want to pay only 11 Dolars of that money he owet you he said he would pay you the rest the next time we are payed off they say we sall get payed 1the of May he is sick now at the in Washington or was when we left so I took $56 of mine & that 11 Dolars of georges & put it in one package that made $67 Dolars & I let our first liutenant take it & he took it & sent it by Express I had it sent to george Barnard of Rome the Justice of the peace I did think of getting of geting a check & sending that but I thought I would let you see some of uncle sams money & it is just as safe & sent it Friday 28th the same night we came away so he did not have any time to write till mody mondy morning 31the I have got a Recipt of the whole amount/ So if you dont get that I can get the same amount & send again I had him t write to Barnard that if he did not see you in a day or to to write to you about it We started for Alexandra Friday night I got there about ten ocolk the same night we stayed there till Sunday about noon & then we got on board the Steamer Vanderbilt there to the city of Alexandra & we started mondy morning about 9 oclock for fortress monroe we got there about 9 oclock Tuesday morning We stayed on the Boat till about one oclock & then we fanned & marched about 6 miles & then we put up for the night & this morning about 9 oclock we marched to where we are now we are about 8 miles from fortress monroe about south west from the fort So you see I did not have time to write any sooner if I had I could not have sent it I received a letter from Jane & Juliann Thursday the 27 I was glad to hear from them ma wanted to know how that pillow went It went first Rate/ tell her she must not wory any about my cloths I keep them mended & washed the Boys some of them had great washing Bills to pay the Captain I have done my own Washing & kept my mony george says that you only got them 22 Dolars worth of provision & you was to drop them a load of wood & he dont know whether you have or nor not I remember of your telling about drawing them a load write all about it he has heard how his wife is Dead our Regiment has got in to a Brigade there is five Regiments in the whole the 93 & 92 & to others are in our Division our Division goes by the name of Caseys Caseys Division & palmers Brigade Casey is the genral of the whole five Regiments We came through the village of Hampton tuesday in the afternoon the place the Rebels burnt last sumer it is about as the large as Rome nothing is left only the Chimneys We talk of Marching to day a little further tell Jane I will try & answer her letter prety soon w write whether you have got the old drum home or not Write as soon as you can I want to know whether you have got that mony or not Direct to the 81 Regiment NY Volunteers Co I fortress monroe Virginia or Elswere you need not Be afraid/ [front margin] But what I shall get it Emory Wertzs sends his love to you & Charley F D Lizer
