Daniel A. Handy to Jemima A. Raworth, 27 June 186X
Camp for the night 11/2 miles from
Poolsville MD
June 27
Jennie again I
seat myselfe to pen afew more lines. we are now once more in Maryland we got here 2 hours ago it is now sundown. we are 2 miles from the river 11/2 from Poolsville there is a mail goes to night at 8 O.C. so I will send this I guess for fear I may not have a nother chance soon for when we are on the march we dont get many nor send manny mails. there may be a mail come to night when this one goes out if so I suppose I shall get a word from her whom I love so fondly. but I shall begin another letter tomorrow, so if I get one/ I will mention it in it. will send one every time I get a chance to we leave in the morning at 4 O.C. where we go remains to be proved. I suppose to overtake the foe and give him battle sooner or latter. they are supposed to be at south Mountain, about 25 miles the rebs are determined to whip us if possible and if they do the consequences may be of the darkest kind Washington may be captured and they have their independence. so this Jenny will be one of the shortest yet bloodiest campaigns ever known. yes even bloodier than before though the slaughter was fearfull then. Jenny if your eyes could have seen/ the lines of dead rebs I did you would have fainted. O how our artilery did mow them down but our men lay thick on some parts of the field. now love commending you to the care of that being who can only protect u from danger. yes you in the pleasant duties of the household affairs me in the dangers and trials of war. yes darling trust in him for if it be his will we can yet be happy in each others love now dearest I must close for we leave early and I am a awfull tired that I want to get some rest or I shall have to fall out to morrow, so good bye/ love. please write soon and cheer up the heart of him who loves truly
