our artilery was shelling the woods some of the rigement chased them up and got cut up pretty bad our folks was carrying the dead and wounded by for about three hours drawn to a barn that our folks had taken used as a hospital because we did not have time to fetch the hospital tent. the rebels will not fight us without they know they have got three times as many troopes as us then they will not fight us half the
 
it is had to catch the retreating rebels. do not think they will stop till they get to Richmond/ we do not give them much time to rest. think we are going to start somewhere to day we are chasing the rebels with something better than a long stick G as
 
George Foster wrote to David I saw Sam Tuck last Sunday he was well his regiment are down below here about three miles where we came from last Thursday this is a pleasant place where we are camped the river is about a quarter of a mile from where we camped we have got very good water about 1/8 of mi. from here out of a well. there is good many cattle and good barns and good houses that the/ rebels burn there is 8 rebel prisoners here that our folks have taken there is stuff enough to sell here but they charge good prices $.25 for 10 cakes such ones as we get at home for $.01 a piece they charge .07 a piece for a small              $.25 for pies all the Manchester boys are well. tell Sam to write as and George H. when he gets in home. let me know how many fish they got there is a
