Jennie Foster to Frederick W. Martin, 21 August 186X
[margin]          love to Julia                                        Beverly            August 21th 18[?]

Dear friend Fred
As I met Melissa this evening she told me you were not quite as well this week. How I would like to come and see you but as circumstances will not permit I am just a going to do the next best thing, that is write and trust for the sake of the days gone by you will receive it with the kindness and interest with which it is intended I well remember how I used to talk with you at the time that I first started out in the Christian life, but you thought you could/ not accept of that salvation that Jesus so freely has offered to all those that seek him. We cannot undo the past but we can improve the time that remains, the present is yours. May God give you strength and a disposition to improve it. I know you have suffered much, but God knows it all, and has tenderly watched over his erring child. Many many times have I prayed for you when you were miles and miles away from Beverly and I trust God heard them and will answer them for he is willing to receive you Fred just as you are. dont delay another day. he will not reject you if he knows you are in earnest. pray for yourself. our Father in Heaven never refuses to listen to the cries/ of his penitent children. He has waited and lingered a long time knocking at the door of your heart to gain admittance. do let him come in, and rest with you. he will make you a better man, a noble Christian. And when your life is oer, he will give you a crown of life and a mansion in the skies as an inheritance. There are but two ways, walk towards God and happiness is yours. turn your heart from him and you know the result I hope you will get better soon but I want you to decide the great question of Eternal life now. I cannot rest easy until I know you have fully decided to come out on the Lord’s side. I was deeply/ impressed with your situation when I visited you a year ago. And I did want too write to you to know how you stood, as soon as I got home, but I did not know how you would receive it. but now I have told you my feelings in this respect. I feel that I have perfomed a duty that ought to have been attended too before. I want you to particularly read the 51st Psalm. Also the 15th of Luke and I think there is enough in those chapters to lead you to Christ. dont let Satan make you believe he wont accept you, for He will. God never forfeited his word. come just as you are “Though your sins have been scarlet they shall be white as wool, or like crimson they shall be white as snow.” Now Fred good night may God bless you and reveal himself unto you is the earnest wish of your friend Jennie Foster

Be sure and meet me in Heaven.
