George H. Martin to Sarah A. Munroe, 10 February 1864
Vienna Feb 10th/64
Dear Sister
I received your letter a few days since. I wrote to Ben Preston a few days since I heard from Ben Y he seems to be a little better now but I do not think he will be well enough to do duty vary soon if he ever is I am sorry for him although he fairs well here in the Hospital. I received a letter from Andrew and I wrote him to day he is well but is in fear of the draft all the time, so he says he cannot take much comfort at home and I do not know what he would do if he wer here you wrote me about the bag/ I never got the letter or the bag and I do not see the reason of it. there was a deserter fetched in Camp Saturday and Shot Sunday it was a solemn thing I did not go to see him. he fought until the raid took him I hope there may not be such an occurrence again here and I wish this war was over and we may never have another one. most of the men ar sick of it and hope it may end this year.
we got our horses yesterday and there was about eighty recruites came here yesterdy from Long Island. I got a letter from home to night Father says he has not got a letter from John since I left the Island he thinks he is in the Hospital, but I do not/ know his reason for thinking so. I think the living is rather mean here, but I think the folks have better so that is one comfort to me, and I want them to have avery thing for there comfort and they shall as long as I have money left. I have got no letter from Maria yet and I do not see why it is I wrote to her over two weeks ago and I wrote to her last Sunday I do not think She got the first one for if she did she would have ansurerd it, for I believe we think too much of each other. I hope soo to see the day when she and I will be one well as it is I cannot/ think of much more to write I will close if you cant read this send it back and I will see what I can do with it write soon from
George H
PS give my love to Edward
