George H. Martin to Sarah A. Munroe, 23 May 1864
Muddy Branch May 23d 1864
Dear Sister
I will try and write you a few lines to let you know how we ar geting on here. The weather has been fine for the last week, but to day it is quite dull and I think it will rain before night. we have been here one week and it is a fine place here now. I do not think Ben has failed any since I have been away from here. I suppose John has left home ere this. I got a letter from Julia a few days since She did not like it at all about you writing She wanted to break up house keeping and go home/ to board, for She never thought of any such a thing, and she wrote you told her that I offerd you the Album I gave her and you would not except of it. well wound it been better for you to have told her the reason why you would not except of it. however I would have liked it better if you had said nothing about it any ways as you promist too. for such things ar apt to make trouble any way I hope I will hear no more of any disturbance any how. We have picked up some 30 deserters and reffugees within the last three days. Sammy wrote me he was going South a Mackereling. I hope he will do well./
We get papers every day now so we get the war news as soon as you do. on the whole it is not as good as I could for, but I hope it will soon be over and we may se this in peace and hapiness Did you get the last letter I wrote you with 500 and a picture in it I heard not heard from it yet. So George has got out this way at last if he stopes around Washington I think he will much It is a long time since this Company was on drill and as we have got the Camp fitted up the boys do not have much to do now. I have not heard from home for a week now/ I wrote Julia a few days since. Fred wrote he did not think Geo Rust would sell any of the land. I do not hear much news from Manchester. does Ben Preston work in Beverly now. if he does give my best respects to him and ask him when he is a going to write me.
when ar you a going to send that Phothegraph to Maria. I sent her the one John gave me of his. She though it was vary good Ben is in hopes to get home soon but do not let any one know any thing about it give my best respects to Edward and write soon from George
