Maria Leary to Sarah A. Munroe, 29 September 1864
Worcester Sept 29th 1864
Dear Sarah
I have just this moment received your note containing the sad intelligence of the death of Julias Husband. I was very much surprised to hear of it as I received a letter from her a few days ago saying he was getting better and was coming home soon I have thought a great deal many times since she wrote how happy she would be when he got home but how little we know “what a day may bring forth.” Poor Julia how I pity her. She will feel his loss so much. this is a cruel war indeed for how many hearts it has/ caused to mourn and how many homes it has made desolate. God grant that it may soon come to an end. Give my love to your Father and Mother. tell them I would have come to the funeral if I could possibly have done so. but we are expecting company and Abbie our Cook is away so that I could not leave. had I have been differently situated I would have gone. I have been intending to write to you ever since I came home but have defered it from time to time till now, but you must excuse me for I have been very busy ever since my return home. I should be very happy to hear from you at any time when convenient./
I have not had a letter from Geo= for several weeks. I hope he is well. please give my love to all the family I sympathize with you all in your affliction and wish I were with you today. but I must bring this to a close. I am quite well now. with much love I will bid you good bye please give my regards to Mr Monroe.
I remain your affectionate
Friend Maria Leary
