William S. Gibbons to Cousin, 31 October 1864
Camp Chase, Ohio
Oct. 31st, 1864
Dear Cousin:
Your welcome letter of the 24th has been received, enclosed you will find a list of clothing approved by Lt. Sankey, he says of an inferior quality, of course you know I do not want the finest quality. I will also send a list. Namely, two woolen shirts, two pairs drawers, two pairs yard socks, two towels, two handkerchiefs colored, box sulphur ointment, one package of good smoking tobacco. You know tobacco is something that a soldier can’t well do without. I wish you would also send me ten dollars ($10.00) either by express or mail, it will come safe either conveyance. You can send my clothes by express in a carpet sack. I have been here almost four months and have not had a change of clothing my boots are worn out, and having no socks, I have suffered very much from cold. If you send my clothes as soon as you receive my letter I will get them next Saturday. Write and let me know when you start them, every day seems an age to me. I never knew what it was to suffer until I enlisted the army. Brother Alfred if in prison is at Camp Morton, Indiana. I wish you could please write him. Send me a bill of the articles. Be sure and come to see me when you come to Columbus. Give love to the family.
Your afft cousin
