July the 13th 1861
Jane I seat my self to pen you a few breef lines in relation to Times hear and I—The day I left Billey in Newmarket I proceded to Mont Jackson and there we taken the Carres for this place, and arrived the next day at 2 oclock A.M. and on Sunday morning we was put to throwing up a Brest work and planting Canon. Gen. Johnston has fell back to this place with his hole force and Taken up quarters hear his force a mounting to a bout 18 or 20 Thusand, in fact the whole face of the earth is covered with Soldigers in and a bout Winchester there is Troops hear from all of the Southern States &—/
I seen Billey this mourning I was in his camp this is the second time I have seen him sence I have bin hear I have not seen Jackson yet but I hear from him Every day or two. he is a bout 8 or 10 miles West of hear all of the Troops has fell back to this place except the Cavurley and Dock is one of them. The Coverley is Taken yankeys Every day tha bring in a few prisners. there is over one Hundred yankey prisners in this Town now it is thought the yankeys will make an attack upon this place and if thay do thay will meet with a hearty reception. we ar pretey well prepard to receive them &c/
Jane there is a prety smarte sprinkle of page Boys hear. we ar all qurterd on what is called the fare Ground. we get plenty to eat such as it is, but is badly cooked, but I walk a round Town and gether up some good things in the way of vegitables for my self. in fack I am growing fat and most Beautifull to be hould. Jane I have some of that good Honey you gave me yet and it came in most Eligant for I taken a cold and the Honey and some good Brandy cured me &c Tell the Dr he can get a hire[?] of a thoseand Dollars if he wishes some of these Boys wants to get home vary bad/
Jane Tell the Girles not to be come a larmed and pick up some old worn out coger and marry but act wise and wate for the Boys. the war will soon be over and the Boys will return home fat and sasey. Give the girls my Tallest compliments and Tell them I am coming expressly to see them be fore long wether the war ar over or not, for it is imposible for me to live and in joy health with out seeing the sweet Dear littell creaturs a casioneley, and the girls ar so awfull ugley hear. This leaves me well and I Hopeing it may find you all the same
