T. F. Williams to Father, 1 January 1862
                                                                                    Bowling Green Ky. January 1st 1862
 
Dear Father
                        I seat my self this new years morning to drop you a few lines to let you know I am wel hoping these words wil find you all enjoying the same blessing the Company has gone out on drill and I am left for I cook for our mess I have gust put my Beef on and wil have to be in a hury before time to cook the Bread and make Coffee we wil have to march over the river this evning to go through an inspection by Gen Davis we are commanded to have on clean shirts and a rub our bright. we have fine weather now the ground does not even freeze the old Kentucians says this is warmest winter they ever saw we have had but one cold spell since we have been here our tent is about a foot deep in straw besides our bed and if it was to turn cold we could keep warm at night. I have writen 4 letters and have received no answer yet It seams strange that evry body can get letters but me I want you to write as soon as you get this I am going to send it by a man that has got a discharge from our Company and says he wil leave it at Saltillo I wil write one evry week or two shure give my love to Aunt Martha and tell her howdy for me and tell tom and bud to be good boys and save me some Potatoes and Cabbage we get nothing but Beef and Flour to eat and we have shugar and coffee but no corn meal Remember me as your affectionate son
