Brother Joseph
I seat my self to write you in ans to this letter which I recd last night I was glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well and that the rest of the folks were well I am quite well at present except a soar throat I have been well since I left home well Jo I have seen some strange things since I left home I have seen the Rebls both dead and alive I have seen hundreds of our Soldiers wounded some of/ them with a leg off some with an arm off and some shot right through Gen Halleck has now under his command about one hundred and fifty six thousand men before Corinth and I persume they will have a pretty hard fight there our Regt wont be in the fight we have been up within about 4 miles of Corinth and was orderd back to Pitsburg Landing to help Guard this place our Regt is pretty hard up we lost 234 men in the battle and we have got over 500 hundred in hospital so they thought we would not do much in the fight so they sent us back I dont think this thing will last long I have got some trophes that I expect to bring home when I come tell Ira that/ I send my respect to him an Louisa and all enquiring friend I would like some of your cheese we dont get very good cheese out here it is awful hot out here the thermometor stands about 90 in the shade thats pretty hot for May aint it I can tell you it makes me sweat sitting in my tent doing nothing our wounded boys are dying evry day they dont stand it long in this hot climate it is pretty hard you said your cousin was wounded at this battle but thats a mistak for the want any New York Regts in the fight he must have been in some other fight no more at present but remain your affectionate
