Dear Father I take this opportunity of sending you a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. in the first place about a week ago I was detacht from the Reg to Report to quarter master Nickells to act as general forage master and am now with him got a good Birth like it first rate. how long I will Remain I dont know perhaps all faul and winter I seem to Suit the place well get along well and have a good Officer over me. the quarter master is a gentleman he says he likes me Bulley. well the Reg is campt about 4 miles distant the Boys all envy my position Major Conover had me sent I think Major will do as he said give me the good places. I like him/ well as an Officer and as a gentleman.
 
well poor Bert was left Back at greenville hospital and since I come I have not heard from him. But hope he will come up some of these days all Right. the weather here is very hot but agreas with me first Rate I am Reduced in weight to 112 pounds Bert was Reduced considerable. the musquetoes are the greatest pest we have this little town is situated on a Bayou called Lafouche a French name. this little stream is Navagable and is 80 miles from New Orleans the Reg now is campt  on General Brags Farm. But I beleave the General was not there he had taken Reffuge South further sutch is the case and the Yanks will Run his farm. well we may have to fight some before long I expect but how ever we will try and give them the best turn in the shop. we are getting tired of waiting on Grant so we will do a part ourselves if it comes in our way
