Silas C. Swift to Albert D. Swift, 2 November 1862
Barrington Nov 2nd 1862
Dear Brother
I am at Uncle Guys yet and am likely to stay about two weeks more and then I am going to teach school in the town of telford provided I can pass an examination.
You may seem somewhat surprised to think I am going to undertake the management of a School this winter as long as my health is so poor but Albert I am getting good pay and have an excellent school so they all tell me/
William has taught near where I am going to and he says it cannot be any thing but a good school I did not think of taking a school this winter untill yesterday. William and I went down to the village yesterday and he saw one of the committee and asked him if he did not know of some one that wanted to hire a teacher so William introduced me and I engaged the school for four months at 17.00 William teaches in the next district about one mile from me and we will have good times provided I can stand it/
I tell you Albert I am having just a good time here Aunt Maria cannot do too much for me and she thinks I am a model of a gentleman and you would be surprised to see our cousins they are gentlemen and Ladies in every respect and you would be pleased with them I run around the woods every day and am recruiting right up but Albert I am miserable I do not have any appetite and have to lay down every day and take a nap but am far better than when I came/ and now I will close by bidding you good Bye until I write again which will be as soon as I hear from you again my regards to all from your Brother Silas Swift,
they all send their regards to you
