Silas C. Swift to Albert D. Swift, 2 November 1863
Great Barrington Nov 2nd 1863
Dear Brother
Yours was reced about five minutes since and was surprised to get a letter on Monday did you put the letter into the office on Friday—
I have no news of any importance to write this morning I am quite well and feel first rate. I went to Church yes in the forenoon and then hitched up my horse (for I have a horse any time I want it) and went over to Uncle Guys found them all well but Auntie who was very sick with the stomach complaint She has been sick a week Mattie and Julia pulled my whiskers so hard that my face is very sore today and how I hugged them to pay for it. I kissed Mattie more than a hundred times Oh I know you would like them all if you could see them and you must come down and make them a good visit. George will be home thanksgiving which is 26th Nov and you must come then I do not go out much except with my/ Violin I play with Mrs Gibbs one of the Firms wife Sometimes evenings and enjoy myself very well Otherwise I go out but very little there is any amount of Girls around in this town but they are the least of my troubles I would like to see you very much and have a good chat with you and hope to enjoy that Privelege soon you must come down and see me soon and I will talk you blind I have not had an answer from Uncle Lanford in a great while do not know why they do not answer but do not care much I am just as independent as ever if they do not care to answer my letters they can do the other thing I will show you some splendid country when you come down I wish you could come in the Summer for I certainly think it is the most beautiful country I ever saw one of the hands at the Factory hung himself a few days ago and is buried to day Nov 3rd to day is Election I suppose there will be loud times tomorrow a menagerie is coming next day the Barker Family will give a concert and Friday a negro is going to be hung at Lenox for murder so you see that something is going on all the week I reced a letter from Mother last night/ they are well Charlie is attending School
Tuesday Eve I will now try and draw my letter to a close although I am very tired I tell you Albert this is irksome business I get sick of it and wish I was out of it things do not go off so pleasantly as I could wish sometimes and then I fret trade is good now days I have sold about 100.00 to day alone four of us in the store and if they have sold as much as I have they have done very well I have the name of being as good a salesman as there is in town I do not know how that will leave it for other people to judge one thing I do know that customers come in and enquire for Swift quite often I sold two Bills goods each 40.00 so I think have done well but now will close for will have nothing to write next time if you see Orville tell him to write and Willie too why don’t they write
good night
from your Brother
Silas
