Martha E. Hamilton
Martha E. Hamilton (maiden name: Bump) was born on August 9, 1833, in Salisbury, Vermont, to Lothrop and Rebecca Bump. Her father was a farmer. She grew up in Salisbury, and she married Eugene A. Hamilton on April 12, 1852. They had at least five children: Martha, born around 1854; Mary, born around 1858; Eugenie, born around 1863; Frederick, born around 1867; Fanny, born around 1867. They lived in Salisbury, and her husband worked as a milliner. By 1860, they owned $2,000 of real estate and $875 of personal property. A decade later, they owned $4,000 of personal property. Her husband died of consumption on September 29, 1887. She applied for a widow’s pension the following month, and she eventually secured one. She died of apoplexy in Salisbury on November 21, 1897.
