Mannasa July 29th 1861
 
Dear Mother
                        I seat my self this morning to drop you a few lines to let you no I am well at this time hoping these few lines may find you all the same Brother Wm reached here last Friday all well & harty And send his love to you all. he got a furlow to come home before he left Tiby, but he was orderd here rite strate & he could not come home. I dont know where Brother John is, But he is all rite I recon we had the grates fight here last Sunday you ever heard of, if you could see the Battle Field you would Shuder. I never witness such a sene in my life / The field is coverd for a bout Ten miles with dead Yankeys, & we got more of there property then we no what to do with. we got old Scotts Carrage, one of the Compleetess things you ever saw, we also got Shermans Battery, of 42 guns, & 27000 Stand of Small Arms. we lost a good many good men in the fight among who were Col Bartow of Savannah Geo. I have seen William McGrath, Bob McGrath James Souls, & Tom Sherman all from about there. I can see almost any body here I look for. Uncle Solomon is in Richmond. Tel Faney & Beckey I saw ther picture Brother Wm has got & I think they are very prity to. Tel Jimey I wish he could see the Battle field. / He could see more dead men then he ever saw live ones. Some with there head shot of, some with ther arms & some with there Legges, And some not dead beging evry body who pases to kill them. We expect to have another grate battle Soon, which will be the Battle of all Battles. We expect to kill the last Yankey who atempts to fite us.
 
John has gone away up in the Mountins & I have not heard from him since he left Richmond. I got a letter from Mary stating the Death of my sweet little Baby on the 13th of this month, & it like to of greaved me to Death But I resine it to god who gave it being. Brother Wm is the fatest Boy you ever saw / he is as large as my self & John both put together Give my love to Puss especily & tel her write to me. I think we will all be at home very soon I think one more fight will settle there hash, if this has not done it already. we are all ginerly well in the camps, there is only Sixty Thousand here now & we can whip our weight in wild Cats.
