Mary Gordon (maiden name: Buchanan) was born on February 17, 1809, in County Antrim, Ireland (present-day Northern Ireland). She married William Gordon, and they had at least eight children: John, born around 1830; William, born around 1832; Samuel, born around 1836; Robert, born around 1838; Grizella, born around 1840; Edward, born around 1842; Henry, born around 1847; and Mary, born around 1850. They probably immigrated to America in the 1820s, and they settled in Saluda, South Carolina.
Her husband worked as a farmer and shoemaker. By 1850, they owned $1,500 of real estate. A decade later, they owned $3,300 of real estate and $7,400 of personal property. Her husband died on August 21, 1869. By 1870, she was living in Long Cain, South Carolina, and she owned $3,000 of real estate and $800 of personal property. By 1880, she was living in her son Samuel’s household in Long Cain. She died sometime after 1880.
