Willard N. Daggett to William Eaegle, 20 April 1865
June 5th 1865
Camp of Detach 10th Mich Cav
Near Knoxville Tenn April 20th/65
Dear Brother with gladness to day I received your letter of April 24th it has been two months very near since I had heard from you. it found me well and was glad to hear of your good health we are having fine times here now the mounted part of the Regiment are on a scout with Genl Stoneman and what is left in camp are mostly Recruits and I was left in Charge of our Company which consists of about 40 dismounted men /
we have no Guard or patrol Duty to do at all we drill 4 hours each day when the weather will permit the balance of the time we occupy in playing cards or some other amusement. So you see we can enjoy that kind of life some time—
I suppose you have heard of the fall of Richmond long ago besides other glorious news from our Armies but it has been suddenly checked by the news of the assassination of the President Abram Lincoln but the Rebs lost their best friend when he died for they have got / a man to deal with them now unless I am mistaken who will make them come to time with less mercy than Mr Lincoln would
I have not heard from home for ten days until to day I then got one from each one of the family they were all well except father who is lame well I must Close for this time and I will try to do better next time give my kind Regards to all the boys of my acquaintance
