Esteemed Friend
it is with pleasure I pick up the pen to write a few lines to you I am in fine spirits and good health and trust this will find you enjoying the same blessing I have not had any letter from home for some time neither have I received any from you, but I trust this will bring an answer we are having very good times here although we are quite busy we are building a fort here and have got it nearly completed now /
a detachment of our regiment with 20 men from our company went out on a scout a few days ago and came across about 60 rebels at Greenville they killed about 20, and took 23 prisoners it is very warm weather here now with occasional showers which cools the atmosphere a little I heard to day that Lincoln was the nominee for the next presidency how do like the idea. I do not hear much news now but am looking anxiously for something from Grant at Richmond I hope he will be successful there as at Vicksburg and with less labor. our Orderly is detailed in the Commissary Department and reduced by his own request and I am acting in his place / until Some one is appointed in his stead I can not think of much to write to day so I will close—Give my best wishes to all of my acquaintance and tell them all correspondence from them will be cheerfully answered
I remain as ever
your friend
