                                                                                    Febuary the 12th 1864
 
Dear Father
            I have just recieved your letter of the fifthe of this month and was glad to hear from (you) so soon (your) letter found me coughing and sneesing from the affects of a sevier cold thar is som smallpox hear at this Prison but but I hope to escape as I have don hear to fore thar is about seven Thousand Prisnors hear and six hundred has enlisted in the U. S. Navy and about half the remainder say they do not want to bee exchanged but want to take the Oath and quit the ware thar will bee somthing done I think in a few days in regard to an exchang I hope thar will for I am tierd of Prison life tell Sister Ann that She must bee a good Girl at school and learn fast and wright to me I recieved one letter from Wiliam Hoskins stating that John was at home Give my Respects to Mr Winn & Family and tell them that they must wright to me all so Uncle James Highsmith & Family Give my Love to ma & all the children
