William L. Norton to Sophia Norton, 9 December 1861
Headquarters Annapolis
10 Reg. Co. B.
Dec 9th 1861
Dear Mother
I We have had such good newes to day (or to night) that I thought I would sit down & write you a few lines to let you know what it is
To night on dress parade the orders that were read to us the regiment informed us that Lieu. Otis has been appointed our Capt. in the place of Capt. Hudson & now we are all right again & to night we all got in / to line & gave him three cheers & he came out & spoke to us & said he should allways stand by us & then we gave him three cheers again He We all love our new Capt & shall do all we can to please him & he will do all a man can do for us We have got a good Capt. now in there & Capt. Hudson is an Aid De Camp in our Brigade he will do all for us that he can so we are very well provided for so you will not have any fears for me Our Capt. will look out for us & see that we are well taken care of
We had a Brigade drill to day under Gen. Foster for about four hours I liked the drill very much. The Brigade / consisted of the 51st N. Y. 27th & 25th Mass & 23 & our own reg. Our reg. had the handsomest collors of the whole & they are the prettiest ones of any regt about here
But I must close now
When you write send me some postage stamps for I am all out I can not get any
From your son
Wm L Norton
