Frederick C. S. Hunter to Sarah M. Fulton, 10 January 1865
Johnson’s Island Ohio
Jany: 10th 1865.
My Dear Cousin,
Many thanks for your kind letter of the 1st which reached me on yesterday. I was just about to write to you to let you know that I had failed to find out anything about the Officers you had inquired about. I am glad you have succeeded in finding one of them—It may seem strange but it is really very difficult to find out whether a certain Prisoner is here or not. there is such a larg crowd of them—I know very few myself beyond a small circle of friends, mostly Virginians. I am a very poor hand at making acquaintances. it requires to much exertion. I have of late become too indolent to do much else beyond reading & writing, in which easy occupation I pass the most of my time. I am very much obliged to you for sending Fred Griffith’s address, I shall write to him immediately. He is very ceremonious, I think he might have written to me, But I suppose as I am an now an old “residenter” in these parts, & he is only a new-comer; “etiquette” requires that I should make the first “call”—I am going to try & get a permit for you to send me some books, Will you send them?—Have you gotten any Flag of Truce letters lately?—answer soon Your Aff. Cousin, Fred. C. Hunter
