                                                                                                Aug 31st 1864

My dear Sister Maggie
Here I am still a prisoner, but being under the same restraint as was the Elder Hamlet, Shall not attempt any agricultural, or other experiment for which this climate is so eminently suited; the stars may shine on as brightly as when I looked upon them last; so long ago! neither shall a single braid or curl be disarranged—only see how you escape! You ought to be very gratefull—Heigh Ho! As I have already said, here I am; have been a prisoner more than a year; but have got to enjoy it hugely. Am as lazy as possible, having nothing to do; live well and grow confident and something also to be considered, out of danger—You know Gatos San Mantinas: When you see him give him my regards He has obliged me sometimes, and I dont like to be ungrateful

I saw your old friend Maj Brent a few days before my career came to such an inglorious termination. We had not met for a long time talked all night about you all and old times. I do hope you will write to me. I have not recd any letters from my friends except in answer to the first one I wrote to Tom Sanchez. Give my regards to the Ks. How I wish I could see them and any other friends. perhaps I shall some day. Quien Sabe. I have grown very sordid and covetous since I have been in prison, although I fear the feeling had taken pretty strong hold of me before I was caught. I used to think I did not care much about money or property; but I am changed. You know the old fellow who owns or says he does;Venganza: Well: almost my whole time is passed musing upon how I may get it into my possession. Will he sell out? any way the hope that he may keeps me up. Health is good. Page is out. Dearest Sister, do not forget to write to Your Affectionate brother A. Ridley, Maj. Tex. Cav. Prisoner War Johnson’s Island
