My Friend
Miss Julia M. Dodge, or rather the friend of every true Souldier having received a comfort Bag, and a letter from you, I will try and acknowlage the good that these little gifts do for the Soldier, in many cases in the front the Soldier cannot get these little nesesaries, and besides the knowing that the folks at home are a thinking of him, is one of the Souldiers greatest comforts / as to the Little comfort that I received of yours, I found a greate many little things neadefull, and knowing that I had shuch noble young friends that it made a new life in me, for I know I have something to fight fore, but sometimes it looks like a bad place to get thrown, but I have got through so far a live. I have been in the following Battles, FreadricksBurg, Chansolersville, Gettysburg, Wilderness and the following Skirrmishes Seaders, Auborn Mine Run Morrises Farm escaped them all except the / Wilderness, whare I was hit by a Minnie Ball just in the edge of the Hair, over the right eye. Surgeon Henry Palmer in charge of Hospital removed Thirty Four pieces of Skull but I managed to live through it, and hope to bee able to take care of my widdowed mother, in her declineing years, but my days of Soldiering are past, for I shall never be able to do Duty agane but I have tried to show my good will and am now paid, to see that thare is young people a growing up that take so much pride in their friends that are a fiting for their Country / my Father Died since I have been in the Army and I am the onley Son and have but one Sister and I know she thinks of the Souldiers and it makes me proud to think that I have such a sister I am surrounded by a larg sircle of friends in York that I have made since here and have had some very pleasant times here with them. Miss Julia A hapy Knew Year to you of course such a friend of their Countrys as you are ought to have a Happy, although our country is in parel yet but our armys are a having all the victories all the while as for my Knew Year it has ben very pleasant you may want to know what trop I belong to, I belong to Co C 141st Pennsylvania Vols. this from your friend and a friend of our Countrys
