Dear Sister
I will now try and answer your very welcomed letter which was recived few days since I hapend this morning to think of it and I found I had not yet answerd your letter I nearly forgot it entirely the way of it was the next day I went on guard.
You spoke of in your letter about the Presidents death it was or is a sad affare. I tell you it made quite a stir here / when the news came you could see all over assembild in groups men with with darkend features. If they were then loose among copperheads it would not do for aney of them to open their heads in rejoicing. It’s a bad thing for them they dare not to talk so freely as they have all the time, not in the presance of soldiers.
Mother you say was dissapointed she thought it would prolong the War. not so it will end it sooner if aney thing.
The jenral opinion of the men is that we will be home in a few months but I gues not / before next fall.
I had a letter from E.G.B. a short time ago it was such a sickening one I could not think of answering it I burnt it up.
Gusta have you seen a young lady down in Saugat from Cannada she stays with Lena Wade I am goain for her if she is as good looking as I hear she is. If you know aney thing conserning her let me know please—Wel I cant think of aney thing to write I do not feel very sprouce I did not sleep aney all last night I had the teeth ache. We expect to leave here soon /
I gues I had better quit for I cant think of aney thing sencible or interesting and I’v. got most an aufull poore pen if you can read this you will do well.
Give my love and respects to all and write soone
I remain as ever your
affectionate Brother
John. Bartell.
