Franklin L. Stuart to Nathaniel T. Stuart and Adolphus L. Stuart, 23 September 1861
Potomac Army September the 23 1861
Dear father I taking the pleasure to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well at present and hoping these few lines may find you in the same state of health. I got a letter from you the other day. I was glad to hear from you all. I want you to tell me the news and about the farm and the corn crop and how you is getting along waging and about the pay. I would like to come home to see you all and all the things and see country and I will come home as soon as I can git off. This is the hardest place out. I seen whiskey sell for 12 dollars a gallon that is the most that I ever saw for the stuff and it is pretty hard to git it at that.
I want you to tell mother that I want her to dry some peaches for me when I come home and some seet potatos and onions. I can eat anything I come upon roots they ain’t anything that goes. I want you to send me a pair of boots and send them by Mr. Cephus Quickel. He is coming down here, be sure and send them for I am barefooted and there aint’t none here to fit me. Send me some paper and envelopes and send nothing else but them please be sure and send them now at present. Write as soon as you git this.

Dear brother I take the pleasure to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well at present hoping these few lines find you in the same state. I received a letter from you dated the 5 September which game me great satisfaction to hear that was well but was sorry to hear that mother wasn’t well and Mickell too. This is a hard place here. I am stout as usual we have moved again to another place it is 16 miles from Manassas. I ain’t much to write but tell mother that I am doing tolerable well for stocking drawers and shirts. My stocking is about out. I wasn’t you to write me some and send them to me by someone. Mr. Berry is coming home shortly, and you can send them with him with them things you can send me 2 shirts, check shirts not white ones, and socks. Tell sister that I want her to write me now whether I writer or not. I ain’t any paper, tell them all howdy for me, tell Mickell that I want him to take care of my mule and the other things and if I git home I will give him some too. Tell mother not to be uneasy about me. No more at present, write soon and tell me all the news.
