Mary Sabin to Uncle and Aunt, 27 April 1864
Salem. April 27th 1864—
Dear Uncle & Aunt & Cousins,
I suppose you heard some time ago, that Warren and one of the Sergeants of his Co. were taken prisoners and until the past week there was none of their friends knew where they were. Last Saturday night the Father of James Drom (the fellow that is with Warren) received a letter from James. Warren is with him and they are in Alabama, prisoners. he said they were treated well & had good fare. Warren requested them to tell me to write to you. he said they were both well. if you wish to you can write to him, sending your letters unsealed, or they will not go as they have to read them in the Union army and after they cross the lines the Rebels read them. they have to send theirs they same way to yu. Direct to Cahawba Prison Alabama, just putting on the name and place without / the name of the Co. & Reg’t. that will do no good. Perhaps you have heard all this before but I have only done as requested and Grand Ma keeps telling me to explain it for you will want to know. if you did know it I have done no harm writing. The 33rd Regiment have been in a battle on the Red river and been defeated with great loss.
I can write no more that will interest you, that I know of, so I will close. Warren will write to you doubtless as soon as he can but they cannot get pen & paper I do not suppose.
Yours, in haste
Mary Sabin
