Samuel J. Keller to Melvina E. Keller, 7 September 1862
Helena Arkansas Sept 7the 1862
Mrs M E Keller
My dear wife as Mr
Sloan did not get off yesterday I write you a few liens by Mr Wisner as he is going to day I have not got mutch to write about I wish if you please you would get Mr Bayha to make me a pair of military pants the collor to be Blue and of good material he has got my measure if Sloan does not go home speak to Mr Philips and probaly he will fetch them to me pants are very scarce and very high priced here. I have writen to you in a former letter about geting my pants stole and nearly fifty dollars in Money all the money I had by me but I can Borow more that I had was Borowed we are to be paide off this month and then I will send you two hundred dollars (Malvina evry cent of Money you can get in silver or golde lay it away and keep it for that kinde of Money is going to be very scarce keepe geting your paper changed and then keepe evry cent of change keepe this advice to your selfe) as I have saide to you in my former letters if you have not bought that land do not I wrote to Hathaway a few days ago that we had waited a reasonable time for the deede and it had not come and that we was not going / to buy the land if you have already bought the land it is all right probaly it is as good a thing as we coulde do. the war news here at this time is very discourageing but I think in a few days there will be a reaction in our favor sutch an event is to be hoped for some times I get nearly discouraged about this war closing it is so poorly managed by some of our leading men the Rebels at this time are whiping our Army at almost evry point if reports be true. I beleive the best army in the United States is here at Helena they are all western men and well drilled and have never been whiped the Rebels dread this army at this point but they like to fight thoese eastern men that are in Virginia I hope these few liens may fine you all well and doing well the Boys are all geting better slowly my healthe is good. yesterday I was out in the woods hunting grapes there are plenty of them here as large as our grapes in the garden I ame going to send some seeds home for I never seen sutch large wide grapes before when it gets later I ame going to send you home seeds of flowers when I can get them I also want to send home some cotton / seede that will grow, and I do hope I will get home in time to make garden next Spring my love to you all yours most affectionately
