                                                                        Near Greenwood Missisipi March 28th/63
 
My dear Malvina
                                    I set down to write you a few hasty liens hoping they may finde you all well the mail has just come to hand I received a letter from you dated the 15th of this month I am sorry you have been so unwell but am glad you are nearly well again you say you have Paide our Tax it is not more than halfe as mutch as I Paid last year are you sure you Paid for all. as usual I must say a word about going Home I have come to the conclusion not to go untill I am Paide off again when that will be I cannot say but hope it will not be long untill it takes place I must have money befor I go Home in my last letter I informed you I was not very well but at present I am about well again yesterday we was on a march of eighteen miles we went out to a little Town by the name of Mcnut it is the county seat of Sun Flower County we seen some nice country thousands of acres of corn the corne is in maney places three inches high and looks well peache Trees wer out in Blossoms / one month ago Gardens look nice wher ther is any white persons living we captured eleven sesesh prisoners ther was but one white man in the Town ther was plenty of woman the men have gone off to War the Women wer very mutch frightened at our coming but soon got over ther fright when they found out we wer not going to disturb them the Negroes are Runing away from ther masters at an awfull rate but the poor devils had better stay wher they are they think to get Free from there masters and then they will not have to work any more there is a great maney of Indian Mounds in this country some of them look very nice this is a great country for peaches and apple trees look well also it is also a great country for raising Cotton I beleive I have seen enough Cotton burning while on this expedition to buy all Wells County burnt by the Rebels I seen one Boat Burning with fifteen hundred Bales on it evry Bale of Cotton is worth three or foure hundred dollars. this paper is so very poor I can only write on one side so I will close. we are camped at the same place when I last wrote to you.
