                                                                        In Rear of Vicksburg Miss June 19th 1863
 
            Dear Wife
                                    I again take the pleasure in adressing you a few lines the mail has just come in but nothing for me I was very mutch disapointed but hope for better luck the next time the weather is very warm at present but the health of the soldiers is prety good Military affairs here remain about the same as when I last wrote to you last night we was in the Rifle Pitts and about 10 oclock at night there was heavy fiering to the left of us it was kept up for about one hour it was quite a dark night and there was a continual blare of fire from the guns and shells from the cannons wer whistling an Bursting through the Aire at a fearfull rate we set and looked on as we could not leave our position I have not learnt as yet who commenced fiering the Rebs or our men or what was the result of the affair the scoundrels throwed shells in to our Camp day before yesterday and a piece of a shell wounded one my Company slightly he was standing Close to my Tent at the time there was quite a fire in the City last night it may be the fire was ocasioned by our shells our men frequently shoot Red hot Cannon Balls over at them in the City. I hope those few liens may finde you all well has Abe Johnston commenced halling that wood or saide anything to you about it he agreed to Hall us up 20 Cord and Corde it up at the Wood pile good wood did you have the Aple Trees washed in with soape and how does things look is the prospect good for Fruit I will quit writing for the present probaly it tiers your patience to reade my letters as they are frequently wrote in a hury and poorly done I always take pleasure in writing to you as it is our only mode of converseing together while we are so far apart yours most Affectionate and
