                                                                                    Vicksburg Miss July 4th 1863

                                    Deare wife it is nearly darke in the Eavning but I feel my selfe under obligation to tell you the good news Vicksburg has surrendered to day or I should say the Rebels have surrendered to us as neare as I can guess we get about thirty Thousand prisoners and greate quantys of armes and some splinded cannon it is a great victory and is the downfall of Rebellion hurah for the Union and our Homes this is a proude day for us the Boys are full of life we have orders to march in the morning we know not wher but I think we are going out after General Johnson and his Clan Grant is going to clean out the / devils down this way as it is late and I must get Ready to start in the morning I must close this is Rebel paper I got in the City it is very poor but I thought I woulde let you see some of it I ame as ever yours

            N B it may be several days before I can write to you agane but I hope you will not fail to write to me your letters will follow me up that is if the Rebs do not get me and if they do get me they will have to do som tall running                 Sam
 
Malvina get Mr Kellog to send off for you and get the Cincinnati Commercial it is a good news paper furnish him the money & a postage stamp I want you to have the news & keep the Papers for me
