Natchez Missisipi August 4the 1863
Dear Malvina
I set down to write you a few liens to inform you that we have moved our Camp last sunday Morning we got aboard a steam Boat and Started for this place wher we arived the same day about one hour before Sundown this City Natchez is situated on a high Range of Hills running extending up and down the River we are Camped close to the edge of the City on the Bank of the Missisipi River on a Hill about one Hundred and fifty feet high wher my Tent stands I can set and look up and down the River for Maney Miles it is a beautifull place to Camp there is the most beautifull schrubery and ornamental Trees in this City that I have ever seen in my life there are some good springs of water here but unfortunately there is none close to wher we are Camped Negroes are as thick as Fleese here of all sises and collors I ame heartily sick of seeing the black wretches and hope when this war is over I will never see any more of the black Creatuers.
my health is geting good again since we left that filthy place Vicksburg the health of the Boys is good we have not got a man in the Company but what is able for duty and eate his Rations at this time tell Lieutenent Gordon to fetch me two Bottles of the best kinde of Whiskey and one Bottle of some good kinde of Bitters if he pleases I think he can get good at Mart Bulgers or at Mclerys drug store if you can send me two Cans of Currents or any other good thing I will feel thankfull to you for so doing Jim might fetch down an olde Trunk full of good things for our Mess Bill Buckles John Whitmer & him & my selfe if our folke see proper to send us anything if / you send me anything put my name on it it has been some time since I have received a letter from you I will close for the present hoping soon to heare from you your most affectionat Husband
