                                                my deare wife I again write you a few liens hoping they may finde you geting well day before yesterday I wrote you a few liens after Reading your letters conveying to me the news of your Sickness I have been waiting for an other mail hoping to heare from you again before writing but of late our mails come so far betwen and unregular that it is very uncertain when I will heare from you therefore I thought I would write to day to you it appears as if we are on the back track the report is to day that on to morrow we will march towards Berwick City on the Same Roade we came out on I hope Sutch is the case for I am trying to fix up my Buisness and get out of the Service as soon as possible being you are so Sick I have no doupt when I state in my Resignation papers your condition to the General Commanding he will accept my Resignation I could get Home in a few days if it was not that I had to get word from Washington before I could get out of the Service at any rate I expect to be Home some time next Monthe if possible Say as little about my coming as you can for reasons best known to my Selfe at present but I hope the next mail will bring the glad tidings that you are getting better if not well the weather is Beautifull at present the leaves are green on the Trees Cabage grows well here all winter and onions also this is a delightfull Climate Stock Run at large all winter and require no feeding there is but very little Frost here during the Winter and the Country is saide to be very healthy I see a greate maney very olde / People here bothe White and Black but you must not think I have any Idea of moving to this Country for Sutch is not the case Wells County will always be my Home as you know I promised you when we got Back to Indiana to never leave that State or County again and I purpose on Sticking to what I saide Indiana is good enough for me
 
I wrote to you some time ago that my health was not good at present my health is good better than it has been since the Seige of Vicksburg the Boys are all well and wide awake for Rebels in my last I informed you we had a fight with them it was a brisk fight but did not last long they wer a lot of Devils from Texas we whiped them our Regiment did not do mutch fighting we got in to the fight in time to assist in runing them off I hope soon to see you and tell you all about this Wilde Goos Expedition as we call it if we stay here mutch longer I think we will have another fight on our hands as the Yellow Britches are geting to be plenty close to us evry morning of late we get up before day light and forme in line of Battle untill day light comes so as to be ready in case of an atack. the next time I write I hope it will be at Berwick I shal endeavor to write to you evry oportunity but I hope to heare from you before writing again               yours most affectionately
