“Who’s there” said Smith. ans. Federals. Smith sprang to the door like a tiger cat and fired his revolver at the Colonel but missed his aim. in a moment more a bullet more from one of our Rifles passed through his arm. In a moment more they were all captives. In the meantime Capt Doxey of the 16 Indiana with two Cos. had entered the camp and captured two of the field guns of the battery and a part of the Cav. with their horses. the 35 Iowa came up on the left and compleated the work. At the same time rebel reenforcements were ready coming up. from Dick Taylors force. were driven back by Redfield. and hearing that the camp had now been taken he began his line of retreat. Next day our expidition returned bringing with them 300 prisoners 400 horses and four cannon.
Lo our folks did well a second time. The Steamer Milton arrived bringing a Captain and ten Lieutenents captured also 250 privates also prisoners they belong to the 2nd Louisiana Regiments, the Cresant Artillary and to Texas regiments. Gen Banks is in Alexandria. Great Attention is being paid to the learning of Colored children and quite a number of schools are already begun and are doing well. we have some in this Hospital who go to school and appear to be quite intelligent and saucy.
