Letter dated 9 December 1864, from Silas Doolittle, 75th New York State Volunteer Infantry
Camp Russell, Va.
Dec. 9th, 1864
Dear Sister,
I wrote you a letter this forenoon and to night received one from you, and having nothing else to do this evening, thought I would answer it. I sent $10.00 in the other one and will send $10. in this. I also received one from Coleman. he was well and expected to get a furlough of 15 days.
So, J.H. Davoe is your correspondent, is he? I remember seeing him at Fort Foote. I guess he is a pretty good sort of a fellow, and perhaps you had better send your Photo; but do as you like.
I wrote you a letter some time ago giving you a description of our Thanksgiving Dinner. it was a slim affair—scarcely enough for a sick cat—one small piece of turkey about half as large as your hand. they come raw and the cooks boiled them in about 5 pails of creek water. they were so tough a person would not attact a piece if he had any respect for age. I guess it was a piece of the back & lungs I got (you know that was always my favorite piece).
I believe I will close for to night, but you will hear from me often, Darling Sister. good night.
Your Loving Brother
Silas Doolittle

P.S. Very cold this morning, snow about 5 inches deep—got a good warm fire though.
