Letter dated 27 June 1865, from Silas Doolittle, 75th New York State Volunteer Infantry
Savannah, Ga.
Dear Sister,
I received your letter some time ago and should have answered it before now, but was waiting to get my picture taken before I wrote. well, I have got it taken and it is the worst looking thing I ever laid eyes on. They are about the color of that picture in Mitchells Geography “a New Zelander on his log”, but at the same time I dont know but the complexion rather flatters me.
We were paid 6 months pay about 2 weeks ago. I was going to have sent 80 home but found I was oweing the Sutler more for tobacco, etc., than I thought. so I thought I would wait until we were paid again, which we expect the fore part of next month.
June 30th
The reason that I have not finished this before is I was on orderly day before yesterday and yesterday & was getting ready to muster & to day we mustered for 4 months pay and expect to get it before long.
I was up to the Theatre on the Stage the other night in the play called “The Dumb Man of Manchester”.
I received your most excellent letter of June 11th-18th and will answer it in a few days. I also received Mothers letter a few days ago which I will answer soon.
Our old friends the 12th Conneticut are here in Town on duty with us. Our Regt. & theirs think as much of each other as if they were all brothers. Gen. Weitzel used to call us his “right and left bowers”.
I will close this short scrawl now but will give you a long one in a few days.
Your Loving Brother
Silas Doolittle
