Brashear City
                                    Camp Segle, Feb. 25th. 1863
 
Frank I have not misted to write only it is a Bisey time hear now with Solgers and the Battery it is fun to see them drill with thear horses and Canon on the run and form a line of Battle and fire and then retreat on the run and keap firing and then form a line of Battle again. we hafto drill twice a day and come out on dress parade keap ous busey and keap our guns clean to we dont have mutch time to spear I tell you. my pen aint worth a dam to write with.
 
this is a little Better one of the gunboats run on a snag and stove a hole in it and she sunk perty near the dock with Everything on Board it to the last thear was twenty solgers from company B on Board at the time Some of them had to swim a shore for thear lives thear was four sailors that was sick in thear Birth whitch was drowned it was hard for the poor sailors if it had Ben the captain of the Boat twould Benn jest write for he was Drunk at the time tha say he has run a way he wanted to cross over the rive in the morning
 
and he has not Benn heard from sence tha think he has joined the Rebels and he was a trater to ous we have a grate meny trators in this war Frank’s recived your letter the 23 of february I want you to write every week to me. I have wrote two letters to sister and she haint wrote to me yet marting will find some papers in the offis from me you will find a letter from me every week if tha go safe good By all            Asa Holmes
 
            I have got a Bad Cough yet and I think it will stay By me a spell
