I write A fiew lines to all of you this morning arftear standing at the Brest works for fifteen ours fighting the Rebels. I hafter go on at twelve o Clock to day A gain & stand thear till twelve o clock at night and fase the Balls I have Benn hear so long I dont think Eny thing A Bought it to see A man shot down or wounded I have Benn lucky so far I hope I shall Be till we take the fort it is A hard plase to take it is so well fortifide I wount write now who has got kild or wounded onely that Col. Smith is dead with his wound out of the 114 Regt /
 
oup to this morning thear has Benn 127 kild & wounded the Regt onley Reports 400 for duty this morning I cant tell how meny thear will Be to marrow morning two thirds of our officers in the 114th Regt has Benn kild & wounded Banks has lost A grate meny men since he has Benn hear it aint Benn Reported how meny yet the New orleans papers aint A loud to publish Eny thing A Bought the Batle at port hudson yet nor wont Be till Banks gits through then the whole Batle will Be published in the papers ask Chales straton how he would like to Be hear for 20 days & face the Balls & shells / it is A litle diferance than to set down & milk cowes. But I take it as cool as if I was A milking. what would you think of setting down and writing whear the Balls was flying all A Round you would you take it cool no nor no one elce ownless tha had got ust to it it aint vary pleasent I tell you to set down to write A fiew lines to his friends whear he is in danger Evry moment if I live through it I can tell you wounders more than I can discribe on paper thear is one thing we have got A miserble doctter I tell you he is drunk tha say half of the time I dont / sa so. wall Frank you can tell that your farther fought for the union and suffeard Everything & had to lay on the ground nothing over him night arfter night But the Blue skies in the Rain & mud all for the dam Rebels at the north those peace democrats and the Copper heads tha are wus then the Rebels at the south Remember them for me. cus them for me. mary A Dealia one word to you I would have like to seen your Boys likeness But proble I shant send it I ma git it yet write good Buy once more Asa Holmes
