                                                                         Baton Rouge La. Sept 21863
 
My Dear Mother
                                    I received your Cind letter last night dated Aug the 3d I ame very sory to here that your health is not very good this summer
 
Dear Mother you must not truble your Self about mee for I trust in God and he will purtect me and ceep me from all harm and I hope he will take me throu this war saif and sound
 
Dear Mother the letter I wrote last Sunday I did not put it in the Office thinking I mite here from you before we left we have orders to leve here this four noon / we are going to get on Steamers but I do not know wheather we will go up or down the River Mother you wanted to know wheather I had got over the Disantery or not I have got over it is a coman complaint among Soldiers but I engoy at presant as good health as I have since ever have since I came in the State I way A 147 lbs. I had a letter from Jennie about a week ago She is at Sams she Mattie was very sick. we got the News last night that Charleston was ours the Rebels will soon have to give up I do not think they cane / cary this war on a great while longer Henry Moore has ben sick for some time he will not go with us
 
Well as for Marring I would not marry the nisest wooman in this State and agree to live here alltho this is a very nice country but I like the York State Girls the best
 
now Dear Mother do not worry about me and make your self uncumfredible about me for you now I will take as good care of my self as I cane. this is a Sheat of the paper you sent me I will write when we get to the end / of our Jurney and tell you where we are I write this in haste. no more at presant my love to all hoping this will find you in good health I Remain as ever your
