                                                                                                            October the 17th 1864
 
Dear Mother
                        I now seat my self to inform you that I ame well. we arived here yestarday I think we will go up the River in a day or two. Some say that we are going up to a place cald New Madred. that is 75 miles below Cario, and some say that we are going up to Sant Louis, but I cane not tell you whare we will go to. but I will write to you agen when we get to a new place We are over six hundred miles from New Orleans, and no doubt if we go up the River any farther we will feel the cold this winter. I do not get a mail very oftin. but you know we have ben in a good many / diferent places and the mail dos not reaches us all wais. but I get your letters regular. the wether is very fine here now. hoping that this will find you and Richard engoying good Health I remain as ever your Son
