Monkton September the 21 1862
 
Dear granfather and mother it is with the greatest pleasure that i sitdown to let you know how we are getting along ware all well at present and i hope to here of you the same we halve plenty to eat such as itis we halve no nick nack for we would rather halve some thing strong and wean get Lots of peaches here there more peaches her than ever i saw befor in one time in my life we halve not got all of our Clothing yet but we can get along very well as we are Thommas i ar sho makeing here in monkton and iam agoing to commense a monday to we can work and soulger to at the same time /
 
Cub is here and he is aruning after all of the girls about here and he sais he cant keep his shirt tail doun this is the nice est plase that i ever i got in to we are agarding the railroad here about twenty miles from Baltimore the people is clever here but there is some rebbles he scadered over the cuntry we halve not scounted any of any acount since we halve bin here the boys was out one night when iwas sick and i nowed nothing about it un till morning they herd that there was a rebble jeneral ata sertain plase and they wished to find him There was assmash up here yesterday there was forteen cars smashed up one of the cars broke down and the others piled upon it the frait was scattered every plase /
 
But it is very nere diner time and imust close but istill remain your friend
