George W. Carter to Grayson Carter et al., 13 October 1862
                                                                  Monkton station October the 13 1862
                                                                                                                                    
Dear friends it is with the greatest pleasure tht I seate myself on the shoemaker bench with the lapboard on my knees to Letyou no that I am well and hope these few lines will find you ainjoying the same health we was ordered to go to Parkton and we packed up and started and got there just a bout sundown and alof the other Companyes was there with there nap sacks on redy to start we retire to our rest about nine oclock and in the morning we had orders to go to Chambersburg and that was conterbanded and the next orders was to go to Pittsburgh and to cook three days rashions and we was redy for to go / and a bout three oclock we got orders to go back to our quarters we started and got there just about nine oclock at night and all of the Carters was on gard at one plase and went to sleep and if they rest of them newit they would of reported us to head quarters and they would of but us under gard for two or three day and night we are agetting along very well at present we halve plenty to eat and plenty ware and hoo would not sell afarm to bee asoulger while we was at Parkton yesterday one of our men name ed John marshe went doun from the camp to the railroad to see some bares that was doun there on the cars in crossing the cars the cars started and he got his feet in between the bumpers of the cars and / Smashed them one of them was not sobad as the other I think it was his left foot that Docter Wishert of Washington Cut off the hole company hate ed it the Captain cried like achild the Company I think will pay him some thing for he has awife and two children and he was well respected by all of the Company The first virginia regment passed along here yesterday and they largest Company in the regment was 30 men and one onle as 12 men they was all cut to piece es and there was the 142 N york regment passed along here to harrisburg and there was two or thre other regments passed along here also it is supposed that we will stay here now for about two monthes and then retire to Pittsburgh and from there we no not where /
