July the 11th 1864
Dear parents yours of the 8 was receeved and I was glad to here from you and to here that you all was well your letter found me well my arm is very near well we halve organized 5 Companies here and they number 60 men to a Company and there is a bout 200 hundred Citizens here volenteered thereselves es to defen the City and we are a going out this after noon to see how may more will volenteer to go if we get a bout 5 or 6 hundred more we will meet them with a warm perseption if they come and they will surly come un less they are defeated at Baltimore they are a talking of sending us to Lankister County / County a cross the suska Hannah River we sent out scouts from here the other day and there has two of them returned and they report that the reb scouts are at hanover and that is not far from this plase they Generel is a going to send reinforsements here they are a comeing on the cars to day there is a Colenel here from the 87 Pennsylvenia regment he has volenteered to Command us that is all that my memory will permit of this time Give my accompements to ant Jane and mary Winters Gill and Lizzie Garlow from your Dutiful sun George W Carter

We are all well at presant If you hav not sent George any money yet I think he will need some if thay leave thair ithink thay wont be thare / vary long for the news is a getting worse every day nothing more but remain your wife
