January the 5 1864.
Camp Near Peatersburg. Va.
Dear Father
yours was receveed some days ago and I was glad to here from you and to here that you was a getting a long so well well the reason that I did not answer sooner was that I wanted to wait until I receve ed these things that you sent me well I receve ed them this evening and they was all right only some of the paper was wet but none of the things spoiled even the pies was not broke up the Boots was all right only a little Long and that is a good fault well there is nothing a going on here of any importance only there is a good many Prisners a come ing in and / A good many of our men a going over to the Rebs but I think there is a good many more of the Rebs than of our men the ones is the Bounty Jumpers that is a going over the Rebs we halve bin a tearing down the old works and build new ones here well I am very thankful to you for those things that you sent me and if any one else sent any thing tell them the same well Harry is here and we are a going to try the Cake and a piece of the pie there is nothing more at present from your dutiful sun George.
