Dear father it is with
greate pleasure that embrace this oppertunity to let you no how we are agetting a long we ar all well at present and the rest of the boys is well also we halve bin payed off and Thomas sent 50 dollars home in care of will boyd I halve not sent any home for i did not like to risk it that way but as soon as i get achance i am a going to send 25 or 30 dollars to you and you can do as yo please with it thomas sent to much home for we nead some money here speshela if we go on a march and we are expecting to every day we ar not in any Briggade we are alaying here [?] there is about 3 inches of snow here and still snowing but not very cold I halve bin sick for 2 weeks but are better now our men has crossed the river at the extreme right they cross day befor yesterday and cross back at night / for ra tions
and crossed back in the morning and made them rebs retreat back untill they found they would not dare to go any farther for they had alarg forse infantry back there and they recrossed back to there oun side and took over 2 hundred prisiners they was marched to General Hookers head quarters yesterday they was very hard dressed there was one of of our boys red arichmond examiner and it stateed that they wanted the planters to go to work to planting corn o else there would a famine in the sout and there army had bin scarce of prvisions for 2 or 3 days some of our boys asked the reb pickets if they had plenty to eat the answer was yes but plenty little anough we get plenty to eat here that is all ican think of at this time s good by for the present
