Battle Field near Kenesaw Mountain Ga
June the 29th
Dear Uncle
This informs you that I am alive and well as I hope this will find you. I received a letter from you the latter part of April but we moved the 1st of may and we have been moveing ever since. This is our third Battle since we started Resaca Dallas & here. the Rebs seem to make the best show here that they have made here yet. They are very strongly posted on the Kenesaw Mountain 24 miles from Atlanta and about 17 from the chatahoocha river. I think we will start them out of this in a few days. it dont seem to be Shermans policy to drive them to fast here as it / would bust up their army for any good here and Johnson would throw th his army into virginia and perhaps help Lee out of his mess. I think we could have been in Atlanta 3 weeks ago but for the reason stated this seems to be the opinion here and it is endorsed by the Atlanta Papers. the Fighting has not been very heavy at any of our engagements yet. we have had men enough to Flank them out of every position they have had. there was some prety severe fighting on our right yesterday and I think somebody got hurt I hear that our division was cut up prety bad. we are not with our division now we are temporarily atached to the 17th Corps under Frank Blair who has the left we will be put back in a day or two. Hooker of Thomas’s army / has had decided successes in the last two days as has Gen Scofield they are on the extreme Right 8 8 or so miles from here. I think Gen Sherman is one of the best Generals in the service he handles this large army with perfect ease. Gen Hooker sustaines his reputation as fighting Joe in every fight and I think he is the best Corps commander we have got. our army consists of the following commands (Army of the Cumberland) Maj Gen Thommas commanding 4th 14th and 20th Army Corps under Maj Gens Howa Howard, Palmer & Hooker, (Army of the Tennesee) Maj Gen McPherson commanding 3 divisions of the 15th two of the 16th and two of the 17th Army corps under Maj. Gen Logan [15th] Padge [16th] & Blair [17th], (Army of the Ohio Maj. Gen Scofield commanding with the 23rd Army corps this is no small army for one man to run /
I expected to get out of the service this summer as the Batterys time is out but I think now I will have to stay another year. I have not heard from Thad in 5 months and cant tell what to think of him. I hear from home quite regular they was all well at last acount. We have only had two men wounded in this campaigne yet one Lieut and a private. But I must close for this time so give my love to Aunt Eliza, Mary, Electa and Joe and to Uncle Peter and Aunt Mary, Charley and all the rest of I dont know whether you can read all this as my pencil is not as long as a Tack I direct and stamp my envelopes when we start on a march but I cant write the letters. and ink is out of the question here now but no more at present so write soon to your Nephew
