Capt Haddock John McCombie,
                        My dear Sir,
 
                                                            Your letter enclosing one f an order from the Sec. of War discharging you from the Nebr. 1st to enable you to accept the Lt. Colonelcy of another Reg is just received. I am deeply pained at parting with you but I am cheered by the fact that you secure a higher and more honorable position. You have done your duty faithfully as our officer of the First Neb. and you proved your courage and heroism on the field of Shiloh. I never shall forget my parting with you as you passed to the rear on that memorable field with your wounded arm.
 
All the officers regret sincerely your leaving, but join with me in congratulations upon your promotion. I shall always hear of your success with pride and pleasure. I remember you, and ever shall, as a firm sincere and devoted friend. Let me hear from you often.
 
            Lt Neatherway has become Capt. Vance First Lt. and John Seaton 2d Lt.
