Daniel Davis to David Davis, 18 March 1862

Camp near Winchester
Dear Brother
I suppose you would like to hear from me. so I thought I would write to you although I have not received any letters from you since we got over in to Dixie. I wrote to you while we were camped at Bunker Hill but have had no answer as yet though I dont know what is the reason unless it is that I dont write long letters. I received a letter from Dave yesterday and the Register today but as I wrote to Dave on Sunday I wont answer / for a day or two
We have had pretty nice weather since our arrival here and the boys are taking advantage of it by strolling around town. We dont get to town often. We get a pass the day after coming off guard I have not been on guard since we came here so that I havent got to town yet
We are now in the 1st Brigade Gen Banks Division as Gen Williams is the senior Brigadier of course he takes the 1st Brigade. Col Gearys 28th Penna Regt is now attached to our Brigade so that we will now have the largest and best Brigade / in the Division
There is some talk here of our Brigade going back to Baltimore to be sent on an expidition but I dont know how true it is at any rate Gen Shields Division has gone on in the direction of Straasburg and there must be some reason for our not following him. There is some 12 or 14 Regts laying here and Shields has 16 Regts and about 30 Cannon that have gone on with him. there is an awful lot of Artillery around here I dont suppose there is less than 70 pieces here. there is a great many rumors afloat here about one thing & another but I cant /
from Winchester
get much sense out of them so I wont give you any of them
Nothing more
at present D. D
