Camp Chase Ohio June 27th 62
My Dear Wife I write a line to answer your kind letter I received yesterday but truly sorry to hear that you was so poorly My Dear I do hope you will not fret about me so much as it will have its course and we cant help it at present but thank God the day of redemption will Come I should like to know what the Doctor and all my friends base their hopes upon for my speedy release as I cannot see any prospect at present but still I hope and Pray and trust in him who doeth all things well I enjoy pretty good health but sometimes get the blues pretty bad then go to some friend and have a Chat and I find there are many here and their families situated worse then mine there are more then a thousand in this prison from all parts of the Country. I tell you we are a motly Group rich and poor high and low Preachers Layers Doctors in fact a little of everything gambling in all its varieties but very little quarreling I am in very Comfortable Mess 15 of us and nearly all old men only one that Swears and we have him nearly broke of it what a Consolation it is to know that the Lord God Omnipotent Reigneth and ruleth on earth as well as in Heaven above /
I was happy to hear that the Children were all well and particularly my little Pet and when I can seem to see you all about home I feell sorry that I am not with you I am glad Dryden is well I hope he is doing well Poor Mr Heart I should like to see him before he dies but give my kind respects to him and tell him I hope to meet him in a Brighter and better world where all our troubles will Cease we have some Lickness here but not more then might be expected Doctr Deveer’s wife has been out here to see him but poor thing she went away with a sorrowful heart as she can do nothing for him Mr Smith is well and when Sarah writes to his Daughter tell her to write to her Father he sends his respects to you all I wrote to you last week and told you I recd the money and told you where Ingram was I talking to Judge Thompson yesterday he says he saw Ingram in Wheeling Jail about 3 weeks ago he was well and wanted to see his wife My respects to Avin and John and Jane and Doct and all my Friends I should like to be with you all this day week 4th July My love to all the family but more particularly to yourself and believe me ever to remain your affectionate Husband William Long write soon to Prison No 3 Mess 21/
